Rhamondre Stevenson ranked among USA TODAY’s ‘better career as pros’ list

Rhamondre Stevenson lands on USA TODAY’s “better career as pros” list.

USA TODAY compiled a list of 10 NFL draft prospects who could potentially have more productive careers as pro players. It is no surprise that Oklahoma running back, Rhamondre Stevenson made the list. In his 2020 campaign, Stevenson led the Sooners with 665 rushing yards and seven touchdowns despite missing six games due to a failed drug test. The powerful runner was not able to maximize his skillset and will be striving to reach a higher ceiling at the NFL level.

“An 18-carry, 186-yard outing in Oklahoma’s Cotton Bowl romp of Florida left many wondering what more Stevenson could have done in his collegiate career. The junior college transfer and backup in 2019 was suspended for the first six games of last season due to a failed drug test, but he still managed to lead the Sooners with 665 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 101 carries. Stevenson moves far more nimbly than one would expect from a 6-0, 231-pound back, though he doesn’t run as powerfully as his size would suggest. Even if he isn’t selected until Day 3 and doesn’t take on a featured role, Stevenson’s best playing days might still be ahead of him.”

Stevenson has been compared to Eddie Lacy for his frame and Marshawn Lynch for his pass-catching ability out of the backfield. In 2020, he notched 18 receptions for 211 yards (fifth on the team). His pro day numbers may not have impressed but he did in receiving drills. That ability creates mismatches with his size on smaller cornerbacks and safeties. A big draw for scouts.

Stevenson is a hard downhill runner with great vision. He lets blocks develop and hits holes as they come with stellar short-area quickness. Stevenson is willing to pick up dirty runs through traffic and predominately runs north and south. He certainly has the raw skillset to make an impact at the pro level and uses his dense frame to his advantage. Stevenson is a complete back and although overlooked by many mock drafts, has immense potential at the next level with the right coaching and system in place.
