The New England Patriots have infamously held off on giving big minutes to rookie running backs.
Damien Harris is the most recent example, as he only had four rushing attempts in two games his rookie season. Harris was an excellent back out of Alabama, but the Patriots allowed him to grow and develop before putting him on the field. Since Bill Belichick has taken over in 2000, there’s only been three rookies out of the backfield to have over 100 touches — Rhamondre Stevenson already has 112 total in 13 games.
The fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma began to shine in the preseason as he dominated nearly every moment he touched the ball. He had a slow start to the season after fumbling in the first game, but he regained his opportunities in Week 5. Since then, Stevenson has had a healthy dose of snaps alongside Harris.
Stevenson now has 100 carries for 429 yards and three rushing touchdowns, along with 12 catches for 1117 receiving yards. While asked about his rare minutes as a rookie on Thursday, Stevenson showed extreme confidence in himself.
“I really didn’t even listen to that,” Stevenson said, transcribed by NESN. “I just put my head down, worked, and, you know, I’m playing probably a lot more than any other rookie running backs.
“So, very grateful for that, but I put the work in. I feel like I deserve it.”
Belichick discussed Stevenson’s growth on Thursday and he gave a glowing review.
“I’ve been impressed by Rhamondre’s growth,” Belichick said during a press conference. “He’s very coachable. When you ask him to do something, he really tries hard to do it the way that you want him to do it. He’s improved greatly in every area of the game. He’s a player that has gained a lot of trust and confidence from his teammates, certainly from the coaching staff, really in every area.”
With Harris battling a hamstring injury currently, Stevenson will see an increased load against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night.
