It’s no secret that the New York Giants put a huge focus on making adjustments to the offensive side of the ball this offseason. What may surprise some is how much effort they put into getting a new quarterback in the NFL draft.
Perhaps even more surprising than that is how much of that effort the team let people see on the latest episode of Hard Knocks.
In response to the episode, Boomer Esiason said that he feels like the Giants are “stuck” with Daniel Jones.
“The moment that Joe Schoen goes over to New England and says what he says, and the moment they’re interviewing quarterbacks, they’re not really talking about Daniel Jones, but they really are talking about Daniel Jones,” Boomer said on WFAN Sports Radio. “Because they don’t know what to expect from Daniel Jones.
“You look at the injuries… you then take what Joe Buck said during one of their games when Brian Daboll was lamenting to Joe Buck that he has to be the energy and needs his quarterback to be the energy, and then you take what Rich Eisen said about the Giants being done with Daniel Jones, essentially, they’re stuck with Daniel Jones. As I’m sitting here this morning, that’s how I look at it.”
Of course, Eisen’s rumor-sharing proved to be incorrect but the remainder of the concerns are warranted.
Jones played in just six games last season before suffering a torn ACL. Prior to his season-ending injury, he completed 108 passes for 909 yards, two touchdowns, six interceptions, and was sacked 30 times. His 70.5 QBR was the lowest of his career.
Still, the Giants will have an entirely new offense this season. Saquon Barkley is replaced by Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy. Darius Slayton remains on board and is joined by Malik Nabers. There are no major contract disputes to distract them from learning to work together.
Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka have their own reasons the Giants need to be successful this season, but if they can get the offense firing on all cylinders, Jones may be able to remind us why the Giants drafted him in the first place.
