Report: Washington to ‘retire’ Redskins name on Monday morning

It is unknown if a new name will be put into place, but reports show that Washington plans to retire the Redskins name on Monday.

It will be out with the old on Monday morning, but it may not quite yet be in with the new.

According to a report from USA TODAY, the Washington Redskins are set to announce the retirement of their current team name on Monday morning, while there is not yet a new name set in place as of yet.

Just less than two weeks after one of his most prominent corporate sponsors urged him to change the name of his football team, Washington owner Daniel Snyder plans to announce the retirement of the “Redskins” nickname and reveal a new team name Monday morning, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the announcement of a pending change had not been made.

Other reports over the weekend said that a name change could come ‘sooner rather than later,’ and a few interesting social media detectives have found bread crumbs that lead many to believe that Redwolves will be the new mascot. Both the Warriors and Redtails are also in consideration.

Whether or not a  new name will be announced on Monday is unclear, but it seems apparent that Washington will do away with the ‘Redskins’ name once and for all.
