The Golden State Warriors have the core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green to help reboot their franchise, but adding Giannis Antetokounmpo would relaunch them into juggernaut territory.
According to a report from Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Warriors have been “preparing for years” in their pursuit of Antetokounmpo.
As the league’s reigning MVP, Antetokounmpo is currently set to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2021.
Letourneau relayed that the season being on pause could help the Warriors target Antetokounmpo, per Bleacher Report’s Tim Daniels.
If the Warriors acquired Antetokounmpo next summer, that would be their second big offseason splash in five years. Signing Kevin Durant in the summer of 2016 helped the Warriors win back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018.

The 2019-20 season has been a down year for Golden State, most notably because of injuries to Curry and Thompson. Durant leaving for the Brooklyn Nets was a factor as well, but the Warriors wouldn’t have the league’s worst record had their core remained healthy.
If Antetokounmpo came to the Bay Area, he would only elevate a veteran team filled with experience and pedigree.
