Report: Texas will hire South Carolina’s Director of Player Personnel

Steve Sarkisian continues to land impressive hires to fill in his coaching staff at Texas.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is expected to add another important member to his coaching staff that has ties to Alabama.

FootballScoop reported on Sunday that Sarkisian is snagging veteran player personnel director Drew Hughes from South Carolina. In the words of Sarkisian, “you just don’t say no to a place like this.”

Hughes is well-respected across the college football landscape and has spent time with Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Central Florida and N.C. State prior to South Carolina.

Derek Chang spent four seasons as the Longhorns director of player personnel under Tom Herman. Chang officially announced via Twitter on Friday that he would not be retained under Sarkisian.

It’s clear that Sarkisian is trying to emulate what he has seen over the last two years under Nick Saban. He has brought in several offensive and defensive staff members with ties to Alabama and the SEC. Hughes is known for building a team similar to the way that NFL teams build their roster.

Hughes served as a recruiting specialist for Saban from 2007-11. Given the successes of the Southeastern Conference over the last decade-plus, why not build your football program in a similar light?
