Texas Longhorns interim head coach Rodney Terry will soon only have to go by head coach Rodney Terry in the near future. According to Jon Rothstein, the Longhorns administration and Terry are moving toward a deal to promote the 55-year-old Texas native.
Terry took over as the Longhorns’ interim head coach following Chris Beard’s arrest on December 12, 2022. Beard would be let go by the program shortly after his arrest.
After taking over as the interim head coach in mid-December, Terry would lead the Longhorns to a 22-8 record over the remainder of the season including 12-6 in conference play. Under his direction, the Longhorns would win the Big 12 Tournament title earlier this month with wins over Oklahoma State, TCU, and Kansas.
The Longhorns would earn a No.2 seed in Midwest Region in the 2023 NCAA Tournament where they would defeat No.15 Colgate in the Round of 64 before dispatching Penn State and Xavier in the Round of 32 and Sweet 16. Their tournament run came to an end, however, on Sunday night, as the No.5 seeded Miami Hurricanes erased a 12-point second-half deficit to defeat Texas 88-81. The Longhorns were notably without forward Dylan Disu who was a crucial part of their wins in both the Big 12 Tournament tile run and wins over Colgate and Penn State.
Terry has been a full-time head coach two other times in his career, leading Fresno State from 2011 through 2018 as well as being the head coach at UTEP from 2018 through 2021. As a head coach, he’s totaled a career record of 185-164 with two career NCAA Tournament appearances.
*Editor’s Note: Jon Rothstein reports that Texas and Terry have agreed on a five-year deal worth $3 million per season.
