After reports surfaced that junior running back Keaontay Ingram would pursue another opportunity elsewhere and enter the transfer portal, will Texas look for another back?
Texas played the final two months of the season without Ingram, deploying the two-headed attack of Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. With a new season approaching in 2021, whether they need to fill that void with another transfer is the question.
According to Horns247, current Tennesee Vol’s running back Eric Gray is taking a visit to Austin. It isn’t an official visit due to the NCAA’s dead period being extended once again, but Gray could certainly be an option to replace Ingram on the roster.
Gray was a four-star recruit in the 2019 recruiting cycle according to 247Sports composite rankings. The All-American game participant was the No. 3 ranked all-purpose back in the class and No. 5 overall player in the state of Tennessee. Gray has accumulated 1,311 yards and 11 total touchdowns in two seasons for the Vols. Should he commit to Texas, this is likely a depth move behind Robinson and Johnson.
Bringing in another running back in the portal should have zero bearing on the current pursuit of Cy-Fair’s L.J. Johnson Jr. The four-star back and No. 3 back in the country was set to visit Austin this past week but we have been unable to confirm that report. A decision is expected soon on that front as National Signing Day approaches.
With no word on if Daniel Young will return to the Forty Acres after opting out in 2020, the Longhorns could use at least one more running back on the roster.
