Report: Some within Lakers expect Davis to prefer three-year deal to five

The Los Angeles Lakers will likely have Davis back, but he may want a shorter-term deal, according to Bill Oram of The Athletic.

For something that is still over six months away, Anthony Davis’ pending free agency is getting a lot of coverage, but that’s life in the NBA. And while much of the focus was about the update that Davis would become a free agent in order to be able to sign for more money, it’s not a given that he will take the maximum dollar amount on July 1.

The latest intel on the eventual Lakers-Davis contract talks is that Davis’ side may prefer a three-year deal, which would allow him to get an even bigger contract down the line, according to The Athletic’s Bill Oram.

That would allow Davis to hit free agency in 2022, when he would be just 29, and still in his prime, and James would be 37 going on 38.

To be clear, the deal outlined by Oram is a three-year deal with a player option in the third year. That would allow Davis to be a free agent when LeBron is due to be a free agent in 2022, provided James picks up his fourth-year option worth $41 million.

Given that Frank Vogel also has a three-year deal with the Lakers, it appears that they are looking at being together at least until 2022, which in the NBA these days, feels like an eternity.
