Report: Sixers, Austin Rivers have mutual interest in free agency

There is mutual interest between free-agent guard Austin Rivers and the Philadelphia 76ers.

As the Philadelphia 76ers continue to move toward building their team, they still have a hole to fill. They have fixed the shooting need after trading for Danny Green and Seth Curry as well as their draft picks.

They then brought in Dwight Howard to backup Joel Embiid, but there is still one hold that needs to be filled in free agency and that is another ball-handler.

Coach Doc Rivers could just move Ben Simmons back to the point guard spot, but they still need to find a suitable backup for him. Guys like Curry and rookie Tyrese Maxey can handle the ball, but they are not true ball-handling point guards.

One name that comes to mind is Austin Rivers. He has spent the previous two seasons with the Houston Rockets where he averaged 8.7 points and 1.9 assists as a backup point guard for the most part. He also shot 35.6% from deep in the 2019-20 season in Houston.

According to Jason Dumas of KRON4NEWS, there is mutual interest between Rivers and the Sixers.

Rivers played for his father during his days with the Los Angeles Clippers and he put up the best numbers of his career averaging 11.1 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.1 rebounds while shooting 36.1% from deep. There is one connection plus the Daryl Morey presence when he played for the Rockets. [lawrence-related id=39378,39372,39368]
