Report: Patriots showing heavy interest in Alabama LB

A first-round option?

During the 2020 NFL Draft, Bill Belichick may go back to old reliable: The Alabama Crimson Tide. The New England Patriots coach has been showing significant interest in linebacker Terrell Lewis, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.

Lewis is an athletic edge rusher whose production has been hampered by injuries. But make no mistake, this 6-foot-5, 260 pound linebacker has no shortage of untapped potential. In 10 games in 2019, Lewis had 31 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. There’s a chance the Patriots could consider him in the first-round. But it’s more likely they’d be interested in taking him in the third round, where New England has three selections.

Here’s what the Wilson is reporting:

“The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots have been doing a ton of research on Lewis, getting in contact with his high school and college coaches.”

Lewis would join an edge group that has been depleted through free agency. The Patriots lost Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy, and will turn to Chase Winovich and John Simon for more significant roles. But Lewis could join into the competition for a defensive end and outside linebacker spot, if the Patriots landed him in the draft.
