Report: Patriots not currently interested in Jameis Winston

He’s probably the top option in free agency.

Quarterback Jameis Winston is not likely to join the New England Patriots, according to NFL Media’s Michael Giardi. Though Winston makes some sense as a low-cost, high-upside option for the Patriots, he doesn’t seem to intrigue New England at this moment.

Winston finished the 2019 season with 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The turnovers were the downfall of Winston — and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They seemed ready to move on from him, and the Bucs ultimately aggressively pursued Tom Brady. But there probably won’t be a trading of places with Brady and Winston.

Perhaps Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels don’t think they can reign in Winston, whose turnover-prone habits may be too pronounced for New England’s liking.

Brady did the unthinkable — he left New England to join what seems likely to be a superpower on offense in Tampa.

But that has left the Patriots with a major question mark at quarterback. At this point, the Patriots have quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler. Stidham is a 2019 fourth-round pick, who threw a pick-six in his only NFL appearance. His college career at Auburn was promising, but he showed major signs of regression in his final season. Kessler, meanwhile, was a Browns’ second-round pick, and struggled in Cleveland. (Who hasn’t?) Though he also had issues getting wins as a starter in Jacksonville — again, who hasn’t — his statistics were solid despite bad circumstances. During his career, he had a 64.7 completion percentage with eight touchdowns and five interceptions.

Apparently, the Patriots will wait patiently for another option to present itself. Winston, as talented as he is, isn’t tempting enough for a deal.
