Patrick Reed is in a hospital in the Houston area battling pneumonia, according to a statement from Reed posted on Twitter by Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis.

In Reed’s statement, he said: “I’ve been in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. I’m on the road to recovery and once I’m cleared from the doctors, I look forward to returning.”

Reed withdrew from the Northern Trust on the morning of the first round last Thursday, citing an ankle injury. In his statement Monday, Reed said “the good news is, my ankle is OK.”

Nine days before that, Reed pulled out of the Wyndham Championship.

Reed also thanked everyone for their support in his statement.

According to Lewis, Reed won’t play this week’s BMW Championship in Baltimore. Reed was 22nd in the FedEx Cup points standings heading into the playoffs and projected to drop to No. 26, so he still has a chance of advancing to the Tour Championship in Atlanta, which starts Sept. 2.

Reed’s health could impact his Ryder Cup. The top six in the Ryder Cup point standings automatically qualify after the BMW. If Reed, who entered the week No. 9 in points, doesn’t play he’ll have to count on being one of Captain Steve Stricker’s six picks, which will be made following the Tour Championship. Reed has played on the U.S. side during the last three biennial competitions.
