Report: Panthers, Baker Mayfield aren’t interested in one another

Apparently, the Panthers don’t want Baker Mayfield and Baker Mayfield doesn’t want them either.

Things aren’t working out between the Carolina Panthers and the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft. So how about trying out the guy who was taken two spots earlier?

Well, it seems like the Panthers, nor Mayfield, will get that chance.

Despite a report on Monday from The Athletic that had both sides sending out feelers for one another, Carolina will likely not be trading for the No. 1 overall pick. According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, there is a “mutual disinterest” between the two parties.

“One NFL team that isn’t a fit for Mayfield is the Carolina Panthers,” Wilson wrote on Tuesday. “Mayfield has not expressed interest in being traded to the NFC South franchise, and the feeling is mutual, according to league sources.”

Mayfield is now up for the taking after the Cleveland Browns’ blockbuster move for Deshaun Watson. So with his team opting for an upgrade at an all-time cost, the soon-to-be 27-year-old is soon to be traded from the organization.

But, it probably won’t be down south to Charlotte.

“The Panthers are evaluating NFL Draft quarterback prospects, including Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and Liberty’s Malik Willis,” Wilson added. “The consensus in NFL circles is that Mayfield wouldn’t provide Carolina with a major upgrade over Sam Darnold, who’s under contract.”

Given that sentiment, perhaps it’s just best not to look in the clearance bin for 2018 retreads.
