Report: One team has made trade offer for Commanders DE Montez Sweat

No offers for Chase Young — yet.

The NFL trade deadline is less than a week away. There have been rumors swirling about the Washington Commanders potentially making defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young available for trade.

According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, one team has made an offer for Sweat. The potential terms of the offer weren’t known. Also, as of this time, no team has made an offer for Young.

Sweat and Young are unrestricted free agents in 2024. Washington has expressed interest in retaining both, particularly Sweat, but the ownership change this year delayed any contract talks. And according to an earlier report from The Athletic, the Commanders haven’t had any extension talks with the representatives of Young and Sweat. The same agency represents the pair.

If the Commanders allow both defensive ends to walk, they could receive third-round compensatory selections in 2025. However, those compensatory picks could be lower or canceled out entirely if Washington spends big in free agency in 2024. The Commanders have plenty of cap space available, so they could retain one or both of the defensive ends, but that doesn’t appear likely with an offseason of changes ahead.
