With the NBA set to continue the 2019-20 season in Orlando starting on July 31, the league still has some details to iron out. Specifically, what will be the procedure for a team if its roster takes a hit should a player suffer an injury or test positive for COVID-19?
This is particularly important for the Brooklyn Nets given they will be without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving — the former having ruled himself out on Friday and the latter reportedly expressing on a call with the NBPA he would travel with the team to Orlando as an inactive player.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks of ESPN, the Nets “are expected to have the option to sign players to fill the roster spots for the season-ending injuries to Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.” This would allow the Nets to sign Chris Chiozza to an NBA deal — the point guard was on a two-way deal before the league went on hiatus — and either Jeremiah Martin or another available player, without having to remove anyone else from the 15-man roster.
Though, the only individuals who can serve as “replacement players” are those who played in the NBA or G League in 2019-20, or had training camp contract, per Woj and Marks.
