History could soon be made at Michigan State. On Wednesday, it was reported by Chris Solari and David Jesse of the Detroit Free Press that MSU is working on an historic, 10-year, $95-million contract extension for football coach Mel Tucker.

The deal would make Tucker the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten and the highest-paid Black coach in American sports. The deal will be made up from private funding, not university allocated funds, led by alumni Mat Ishbia and Steve St. Andre.

Even if the Spartans don’t win another game this season, it is remarkable how quickly Tucker changed the culture in East Lansing and this deal is necessary to keep him there for a long time, with other prominent programs like LSU interested in his services.
