The Houston Texans won’t have a coach to consider from the offensive side of the ball.
According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has withdrawn himself from consideration. Johnson also pulled his name from the Carolina Panthers’ coaching search.
Johnson coordinated an offense that helped quarterback Jared Goff throw 29 touchdown passes, the second-most of his career in a single-season. Goff’s seven interceptions also tied a career-low, but were actually better when considering it was for 17 games seven (2016) and 15 (2017).
The Lions had the No. 3 total offense and No. 5 scoring offense in 2022.
Johnson, 36, would have been a part of the Texans’ evaluation of the 2023 NFL draft class and its quarterback offerings, which would help the franchise settle on a future field general, likely picked No. 2 overall in April.
