Report: LaMelo Ball ‘absolutely committed’ to buying Hawks, turning franchise around

While his bid may not have yet been accepted, LaMelo Ball is reportedly still focused on buying the Illawarra Hawks.

A fairly straightforward process in the sale of the Illawarra Hawks franchise turned into a convoluted situation. A miscommunication led to Jermaine Jackson’s premature message to ESPN but hasn’t led to the NBL turning away from the consortium involving LaMelo Ball.

Despite the setback from both sides, Ball and his camp remain committed to the purchase of the Hawks, as reported by the Illawarra Mercury on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Mercury was told by a source close to the discussions that Ball was “absolutely committed” to the plan to take over the Hawks and use his contacts in the US to make them an NBL force again.

Ball brings a unique connection to the table and to his consortium’s bid. As one of the most popular teenage basketball prospects ever, Ball brings a huge fanbase to the table.

He could also help mainstream the Next Stars route as well by taking charge of the team. Not only will Ball be a shining example of the options that can open up after spending a year in the NBL but he could also help convince prospects stateside to spend a season with his franchise.

Ball’s commitment to the franchise also makes him a more appealing potential owner. As opposed to being merely a face and a bankroll for others to lead the way, having Ball actively involved will be beneficial for both parties. Ball can expand his popularity in another continent while the NBL can benefit from his involvement with the league.
