Earlier today it was reported that the Brooklyn Nets and Kyrie Irving talks concerning his future with the organization have gone stagnant.
Despite reports that Irving was “likely” to return to the team, it seems that contract talks between the parties have stopped.
The Athletic and The Stadium’s Shams Charania reported on the progress of the contract, citing that the former All-Star may want to test the free agency waters. Charania stated that Irving and the Nets front office were, “at an impasse.”
Per Charania:
An impasse currently exists among the parties that clears the way for the seven-time All-Star to consider the open marketplace, those sources said.
Nearly two months later, it appears both sides have serious work to do in order to find a resolution that brings Irving back to Brooklyn and his co-star in Durant, who is under contract with the Nets through 2025-26. Several teams across the league have kept tabs on the situation, wondering about the future of Irving and Brooklyn.
The Lakers, Knicks and Clippers are expected to be among the interested suitors if Irving heads elsewhere, multiple sources tell The Athletic.
Irving and the Nets organization have had a rocky relationship, especially since Irving has missed a lot of game time on the basketball court for Brooklyn for plethora of reasons. NBA analysts believe that Irving and the organization would be better off parting.
Charania listed the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks as potential suitors, but with a huge talent like Irving, it wouldn’t be a surprise if nearly every team in the league had an interest in picking up the ball-handler.
Irving is an essential piece to the Nets team, so expect Brooklyn to search for a way to appease him and extend him long-term.
Sources: Kyrie Irving, Nets are at impasse in conversations about his future in Brooklyn, clearing way for the seven-time All-Star to consider the open market. Lakers and Knicks expected to emerge among potential suitors.
