Well, there goes that narrative that Michigan’s rivals have been trying to propagate.

While Wyatt Davis and Shawn Wade had opted out for Ohio State and then promptly returned once the Big Ten reinstated the season, many nationally have been noting that Michigan’s players weren’t doing the same. And, with some degree, with good reason, as Wolverines right tackle Jalen Mayfield appeared to be intent on staying in the NFL draft, according to his father.

However, things seem to have changed. According to The Wolverine — the Rivals.com site covering Michigan — Mayfield will in fact return to the maize and blue for his third season after all.

A source has informed The Wolverine that Michigan redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield will return to play for the Wolverines this upcoming season, despite previously declaring for the NFL Draft and signing with an agent.

If true, this is huge news for Michigan football and the offensive line. The unit already was going to have four new starters due to NFL draft departures, so to have to break in five, it was going to be that much more of an uphill battle.

But now, with Mayfield back in the fold, it will return him and two others with starting experience in Andrew Stueber and Ryan Hayes.

At the moment, it appears that Ambry Thomas is working to potentially get back in the fold with no word yet on Nico Collins.

Michigan’s drop/add deadline is this upcoming Monday.
