Report: Giants will keep Thomas McGaughey as special teams coordinator

The New York Giants will keep Thomas McGaughey as their special teams coordinator on Joe Judge’s staff.

In the first of many dominoes to fall in the coming days, Alex Marvez of Sirius XM Radio reports that newly hired New York Giants head coach Joe Judge will keep Thomas McGaughey in place as the organization’s special teams coordinator.

If your first reaction was, “yes! Great move!” then you’re in good company because we reacted similarly.

Of the lingering members from Pat Shurmur’s previous staff, McGaughey was by far the most successful and was respected among his fellow assistants and players. He helped turn the Giants’ special teams unit (sans Aldrick Rosas) into one of the most effective in the league and had earned the right to return to East Rutherford.

Here is what our own Pat Ragazzo had to say about McGaughey recently:

Thomas McGaughey took over a struggling special teams unit on the Giants back in 2018 and has transformed them into one of the league’s best since his arrival.

Judge served as the special teams coordinator for the Patriots over the past five years and may consider retaining McGaughey, who has done a great job with the Giants in the last two seasons.

While it would be understandable if Judge chooses to bring in his own guy, McGaughey has 18 years of special teams experience and has earned the right to stay given his track record.

It’s still early, but Judge is now one-for-one in making the right decisions for his incoming staff.
