The New York Giants were originally slated to meet with Baylor head coach Matt Rhule in Waco, Texas on Tuesday, but ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday night that Big Blue pressed Rhule to make a change and visit East Rutherford instead.
There’s a significance behind that move as Art Stapleton of USA TODAY Sports Network reports that Giants co-owner Steve Tisch will also be present for the interview.
The Giants can’t let Rhule out of their building if it gets to that point and they have that chance to finalize the deal. The expectation is that he will meet with Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, general manager Dave Gettleman and vice president of football operations Kevin Abrams.
The presence of Tisch is notable for multiple reasons. First, he had promised to be more physically present with the team and second, Tisch has not been face-to-face with any of the team’s previous head coaching candidates, instead speaking with them via phone.
If you do the math, pressuring Rhule to visit East Rutherford and then getting Tisch in from Hollywood signals an obvious potential end. The Giants clearly do not want Rhule to leave the building on Tuesday even with other interviews scheduled later this week.
