Report: Giants ‘extremely motivated’ to trade down

The New York Giants are “extremely motivated” to trade down in the NFL Draft and would like to have a deal done before they’re on the clock.

The New York Giants hold the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but they have not been shy about their desire to trade down — something that would be a first for general manager Dave Gettleman.

“It’s something I will very seriously entertain,” Gettleman said during a conference call with reporters last week. “We’re sitting there with the fourth pick of the draft. It’s going to happen pretty soon. I’m going to make calls and anybody that wants to move up, I’m going to say, ‘Listen, we don’t have much time. We can’t fool around. I’d like to get the parameters of a deal in place before we get on the clock.’ That would be the best thing.”

As the draft draws nearer, the Giants are almost reaching the point of desperation when it comes to trading back.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY calls it “extremely motivated.”

The Giants will be finalizing their draft board over the next few days so they can decide who they could take with the fourth overall pick.

But they really don’t want to make the pick at No. 4.

According to multiple NFL sources, the Giants’ preference is to trade down in the first round of the NFL Draft and they have had preliminary conversations with teams in the hopes of setting up the parameters of a deal by Thursday night. It’s still unclear if they’ll be able to find a deal, but one NFL source described them as “extremely motivated to move.”

Given the virtual nature of the NFL Draft, general managers and shot-callers from around the league seem to be acting a bit more cautiously than normal. And some reports have suggested that the wheeling and dealing we’re used to seeing may be impacted by the technical aspect of things.

Ironically, Gettleman is one of the few general managers who has experience running a virtual draft, so the fact that he’s being stonewalled when it comes to trading is an interesting sidebar to this whole thing.

Ultimately, as Gettleman told reporters during his pre-draft conference call, he’d like to have a deal in place before the Giants are put on the clock. If that has not happened, they’re likely to stay put at No. 4 and just make their pick.
