Report: Giants’ DeAndre Baker skipped the team’s voluntary minicamp

New York Giants CB DeAndre Baker had reportedly been skipping the team’s voluntary minicamp, which had been held virtually.

New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker allegedly fell asleep during team meetings in 2019, but that pales in comparison to the situation he currently finds himself in.

Baker is facing four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault after he, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar and a third party reportedly held up a private party on Wednesday night.

Although the Giants have been in contact with Baker since the Miramar Police Department issued an arrest warrant, they had apparently not heard from him previously.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that Baker had been absent during the team’s voluntary virtual minicamp this week, including on Thursday when news of his pending arrest dropped.

The entire situation is alarming for the most obvious of reasons, and it’s clear that Baker’s issues extend well beyond the football field. He appears disinterested in the game, disinterested in his career and disinterested in the Giants, who had been relying heavily on him entering 2020.

How the Giants intend to handle the situation remains to be seen, but it’s hard to envision the team hanging onto Baker given his detachment from the organization and the very serious problems he now faces off of the field.
