Report: Eagles to hire Colts DBs coach Jonathan Gannon as DC

Jonathan Gannon gets an external promotion.

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly hiring Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon to be their new defensive coordinator, per Michael Lombardi.

This was to be somewhat expected after Colts former offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni took the job to be the next head coach for the Eagles. It should be expected that a few assistants will follow him to Philly.

Gannon had been a candidate for several teams this offseason. The Colts would have been one of them if current defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus gets the job with the Houston Texans.

Gannon also had interviews with the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers to be their defensive coordinator. However, it seems Sirianni gave him a strong enough offer to move to the east coast and the NFC East.

Gannon has been a strong influence in the secondary for the Colts over the last three seasons. He played a major role in the bounce-back season for Xavier Rhodes while helping develop players like Kenny Moore, Khari Willis, George Odum and Julian Blackmon.

The Colts replaced Sirianni with former quarterbacks coach Marcus Brady, who will now be the offensive coordinator. It seems they will also have to find a new defensive backs coach with Gannon getting an opportunity in Philly.
