The Miami Dolphins’ quest for a franchise quarterback is far from over. The team is likely to see veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick back behind center to start the 2020 season — and all indications are that the Dolphins are absolutely, positively still in the quarterback market for the 2020 NFL Draft. But this hope and aspiration to finally solve the quarterback position after two hard decades without Dan Marino has seemingly already left the other quarterback on Miami’s roster out in the cold — that being Josh Rosen, who Miami traded a 2nd and 5th round selection for in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Rosen came to Miami just one year removed from being the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. His arm talent? It’s still present. But by the time Rosen got through training camp, it was apparent to the coaching staff that Rosen simply wasn’t mentally ready to take the keys to the car.
And by the time Rosen’s third and final start of 2019 came to an abrupt end, the fans could clearly see it, too.
Rosen’s physical talents offer enough promise — and some Dolphins fans would like to see him get another shot behind center. Others would like to see the Dolphins cut their losses and flip him in a trade this offseason for whatever we can.
Odds are we’ll see either scenario play out, but according to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero, we are likely to see Rosen back with the Dolphins again in 2020.
The justification for Miami’s trading for Rosen is simple. There are advocates for swinging on a quarterback every year until you find one. The Dolphins appear ready to act the same way, at least in the short term — and Rosen, as a recent top-10 pick, was well worth the relative cost from both a draft capital (a late 2nd-round pick and a 5th-round pick that the Dolphins have since had returned) and financial perspective.
For the Dolphins to move on from someone who the team doesn’t apparently feel is worth pushing all the chips in for, they’d likely need an offering close to what they paid to get him last April. In this quarterback market, that feels about as likely as Dan Marino coming out of retirement to play again in 2020. And so expect Salguero to be right when it is all said and done.
