Report: Devonta Freeman turns down Seahawks’ initial contract offer

The Atlanta Falcons released Devonta Freeman in March, but he remains one of the best free-agent running back options on the market.

The Atlanta Falcons released Devonta Freeman in March, but he remains one of the best free-agent running back options on the market.

The 28-year-old racked up 5,992 all-purpose yards and 43 total touchdowns in 77 games with the Falcons. Freeman reportedly received a 1-year, $4 million contract from the Seattle Seahawks, which he rejected.

Freeman struggled in 2019 — averaging just 3.6 yards per attempt — and while it looked at times like he’d lost a step, the Falcons’ offensive line didn’t exactly open up holes for any of the team’s backs to run through. Atlanta averaged just 85.1 yards per game for the year. Even in a down season, though Freeman totaled over 1,000 all-purpose yards with 59 catches.

Playing one of the most physically demanding positions in football, it’s wise of the veteran running back to take his time and get the best offer and situation in order to make the most of his next opportunity.

If Freeman does eventually agree to terms with the Seahawks, he’ll be returning to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for a matchup with the Falcons in Week 1.
