The Brooklyn Nets have been trying to make their team as good as possible for next season so that they can not only make it to the playoffs, but also make it out of the first round. Unfortunately, any of that will most likely be done without a fan favorite on the team.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Brooklyn is expected to release guard Edmond Sumner. After the team and Sumner agreed to push back the guarantee deadline for his 2023-24 salary of $2.24 million from July 5 to July 15, it’s not surprising that the 52nd pick of the 2017 NBA Draft would end up being released. Usually, when a team pushes back the guarantee date for a player, the organization usually tries to find a trade for a player before releasing him.
As of now, there hasn’t been any reports of the Nets trying to trade Sumner, but either way, it looks like his role for next season would be small or nonexistent because of the free-agent additions of Dennis Smith Jr. and Lonnie Walker IV. Sumner, 27, has been in the NBA for the past six seasons and averages 6.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 47% from the field and 34.1% from three-point land.
The Brooklyn Nets are expected to release Edmond Sumner, league sources told @hoopshype. Sumner was a spark plug off the bench averaging 7.1 points in 13.9 minutes last season. The 27-year-old guard is expected to have several potential suitors.
