The 49ers are bringing back cornerback Jason Verrett according to a report from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.
Verrett has been on San Francisco’s radar for several weeks and head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated the team was trying to get the veteran CB signed. Maiocco reported Verrett will join the 49ers’ practice squad.
Having a veteran like Verrett in the building will be valuable, but with injuries in the secondary mounting the team may at some point have to turn to the former first-round pick.
Injuries have defined Verrett’s career, but in 2020 when he played in 13 games for San Francisco it was clear how talented he is. Relying on him too heavily would probably be a mistake, but as internal depth on the practice squad it’s hard to find better than Verrett.
