While we don’t know whether or not the 2020 iteration of The Game will take place due to Michigan football’s COVID-19 issues, we can look back on different versions of, arguably, the best rivalry in all of sports at some of the best contests that have taken place to this point.
Not only the best, but the most consequential.
It’s difficult to dwindle the best games of the 115 contests that have already taken place between Michigan and Ohio State. So we’re not only looking at the breadth of the series (the Wolverines still lead 58-51-6, despite the Buckeyes’ eight-game winning streak), but the games that have had the biggest impact. Whether it was leading to a national championship or turning the tide in the series, or just being a thrilling game, there were many choices. We also kept it to relatively recent, not going back beyond the so-called modern era of college football, though that spans half a century, at this point.
Though there were some honorable mentions that could have made this list (2018’s Ohio State win over favored Michigan; 2013’s 42-41 Michigan loss, in a game that no one anticipated seeing the Wolverines have a chance), these are the most important games in the series in recent memory.
