Raiders 2020 free agency wish list: running backs

While some may have visions of an all Crimson Tide backfield, it may not be in the cards. Derrick Henry is going to be getting a big chunk of money to continue to be the league’s premiere workhorse.

Kenyan Drake had 817 yards over the final eight games of last season after a trade to the Cardinals, so he will be looking to be getting a starting job and paycheck as well. And speaking of paychecks, Melvin Gordon made it clear he’s looking for a sizable one as well.

Even still, there are a few good backs set to hit the market to could come in and add some talent to the Raiders backfield. And they could use it, especially if they let Jalen Richard and/or DeAndre Washington leave in free agency.

Jordan Howard, 25

The former fifth-round pick by the Bears was a Pro Bowler as a rookie, running for 1313 yards and 6 touchdowns. His numbers steadily went down after that. He still went over 1000 yards his second season (1122) but his yards per carry dropped from 5.2 in 2016 to 4.1 in 2017.

Though he scored 9 touchdowns, his yards per carry dropped again in his third season to a paltry 3.7 yards per carry and despite 250 carries, he couldn’t crack 1000 yards. He did, however, still put up nine touchdowns.

Still, the Bears traded him to the Eagles for a conditional 6th round pick. Coming off the bench, his yards per carry rebounded to a healthy 4.4 and he again put up 6 touchdowns. He can catch out of the backfield as well, having averaged 24 catches per season. The 6-0, 224-pound back could make a nice complement for Josh Jacobs.

Carlos Hyde, 29

The 2014 second-round pick spent his first four seasons with the 49ers who drafted him. Since then he’s bounced around a lot. He was the full-time starter for San Francisco in his second season and held the job for three years.

Then he split 2018 between the Jaguars and Browns, putting up career-low numbers with both teams, before joining the Texans last season and having his best season as a pro. He started 14 games, running for 1070 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 4.4 yards per carry – his second-highest career yards per carry.

Lamar Miller, 28

Just a season ago, Miller was in the Pro Bowl. He ran for 973 yards and 5 touchdowns in 14 games for the Texans, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Miller also has a couple 1000-yard seasons to his name, one in Houston and one in Miami.

Miller missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the team’s third preseason game. Assuming he was able to fully recover from that, he would be worth a shot as a free-agent addition.

Others to keep an eye on: Spencer Ware (28), Isaiah Crowell (27)
