Confused is how much of Buff nation felt when Brendon Lewis entered Colorado’s offensive huddle to start the third quarter of Friday’s season opener. Now, Lewis didn’t necessarily struggle in the first 30 minutes, but JT Shrout’s late second-quarter drive had many convinced who the Buffs’ lead quarterback should be.
In Shrout’s second-quarter drive, he threw for 50 yards and brought the Buffs from their own 1-yard line to as far as TCU’s 45 in about two minutes. His momentum-inducing effort was short-lived, however, as Karl Dorrell let Lewis loose to begin the second half. The Horned Frogs opened with 31 unanswered points and ultimately cruised to a 38-13 win.
Shrout eventually re-entered at the 10:55 mark of the fourth quarter with Colorado down 24-6 — in no position to succeed. The Buffs’ only offense came on a late 23-yard touchdown to fall camp standout Jordyn Tyson, capping a 157-yard (13-for-23) night for Shrout.
Lewis, meanwhile, finished 13-of-18 for 78 yards.
Defensively, Trevor Woods impressed with eight total tackles and linebacker Quinn Perry finished with six.
Wide receiver Daniel Arias also had a few nice grabs and finished his 24th birthday with 66 yards receiving.
