Houston Cougars guard Quentin Grimes on Thursday will reportedly be among the prospects that will work out with the Utah Jazz, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic.
Grimes was named the American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year after averaging 17.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, two assists and 1.4 steals per game. He became the first Cougar since 1993 to be named Conference Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-5 product could potentially be a candidate for the Jazz to consider with the 30th pick. They have had their eye on him as his ability to score and guard multiple positions would fit well. The opportunity to see him in person could go a long way in potentially drafting him.
On Thursday, the Jazz will hold an important pre-draft workout, league sources tell The Athletic. The participants, according to sources, will include Quentin Grimes, a 6-foot-5 guard out of Houston, David Duke, a 6-5 point guard from Providence, and Matt Mitchell, a 6-6 small forward from San Diego State. … Grimes is someone the Jazz like at No. 30.
Grimes is most commonly considered to be a borderline first-round pick. However, he has emerged as one of the pre-draft stars to this point of the process as his name has climbed draft boards rapidly since participating in the combine last month.
While he could very well hear his name called in the first round, he could be a steal for a team should he drop to the second round. As a player that wasn’t projected to be drafted prior to the season, Grimes has put in the necessary work to be a potential first-round pick.
The NBA draft will take place at 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, July 29.
