Pro Football Focus names Spencer Rattler as Big 12’s highest rated quarterback

It’s no secret that Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma and its fans have been awaiting the Spencer Rattler era to begin for the Sooners.

He got things going quickly in a huge performance against Missouri State in Oklahoma’s 48-0 win over the FCS-opponent. Turnovers have come in chunks as two of his five games so far have included at least two, but outside of those, Rattler has become more and more comfortable.

The numbers back it up, too, as Pro Football Focus rated him as their top-rated quarterback thus far in the Big 12.

“While Rattler has made a few really bad throws in crunch time this year — take the game-ending interceptions against Kansas State and Iowa State, for example —  he has been nearly flawless outside of those passes,” they wrote. “He has the seventh-lowest negatively graded throw rate in the FBS heading into Week 9, and he also ranks fourth in positively graded throw rate. The first-year starter has made some incredible plays on the move for the Sooners, too,  earning a 95.0 passing grade on throws outside the pocket so far — the best in the FBS and well above the second- (90.6) and third-placed (85.1) passers.”

Rattler has thrown for 1,518 yards halfway through his second year at Oklahoma at a 69.5 completion percentage and throwing for 15 touchdowns to five interceptions. It ranks up right up there with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts’ start to their Sooners’ careers.

Oklahoma and Rattler will travel on the road again this week as the Sooners take on Texas Tech at 7 p.m. CT.
