Power rankings: Jets being inept doesn’t help Bills

Week 1, 2020 NFL season power ranking polls/ rankings round-up for the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills beat up the Jets to start their 2020 season. Buffalo can only play the hand they’re dealt, but that circumstance came back to bite Buffalo in one way.

While the Bills will have no regrets defeating the Jets on opening day 27-17, Gang Green looking rather… inept, to put it nicely, did hurt the Bills in some national power ranking polls this week. Fortunately for the Bills, they’ll have some time to make up such ground, but for now, let’s take a look around the polls right now. (Plus, they all weren’t this mean).

Here’s a Bills national power rankings round-up following Week 1:

USA TODAY

12. Bills (10)

They had little trouble handling the Jets – woo hoo – but QB Josh Allen must be far more consistent if they’re to dethrone New England.

9. Buffalo Bills

While Bills quarterback Josh Allen did make the occasional throw that reminded us that he’s not quite what his coaches would like him to be just yet…

…Allen also ripped the Jets’ defense to shreds in a relative sense, picking up the first 300-yard passing game of his NFL career, and completing 33 of 46 passes with two touchdowns in a 27-17 win. Buffalo’s defense did its usual thing and turned Sam Darnold into a pumpkin. The Bills travel to Miami for a Week 2 game in which they’ll get an opponent who will at least give them half a fight. If this team can rely on Allen to be anything more than league-average at his best, they’ll be a force to reckon with.

Week 1: vs. New York Jets

It’s been a long time since the Buffalo Bills entered the season as the highest rated team in the AFC East, but it’s not the strangest thing that’s happened in 2020.

6. Buffalo Bills (1-0)

We got the Josh Allen pu pu platter in Sunday’s win over the Jets. Big plays with his legs (57 yards, TD), a career-best passing day (312 yards, two scores) and — yes — a pair of lost fumbles, both on the opponent’s side of the field. Allen also airmailed a gimme TD to John Brown that would have put New York away in the fourth quarter, but on balance, the day was a successful one for both the Bills and their polarizing third-year quarterback. A trip to Miami is up next on the schedule; getting the Jets and Dolphins back-to-back is pretty much the ideal way to start a football season in 2020.

5. Buffalo Bills 1-0 (10)

The Bills had their way with the Jets as Josh Allen looked every bit the part of a complete Year 3 quarterback. Their defense swarmed and made it look easy, too as the new AFC East favorites.

9. Bills (No. 9

Josh Allen could soon land in the franchise quarterback category.

4. Buffalo Bills (1-0, LW: 5)

Social media had fun with Josh Allen missing an easy touchdown pass in the end zone, but anyone who watched the Bills dissect the Jets knows how good Allen was on Sunday. Yes, he is going to miss some easy throws. That will always be a part of his game. But he can also make a lot happen with his arm and his legs, and his performance on Sunday was a positive step, regardless of what you might have seen on Twitter.

Week 1 Result: Won vs. New York Jets 27-17

The Buffalo Bills have made the playoffs in two of the last three seasons. But with the New England Patriots undergoing a roster overhaul in 2020, the Bills entered this season as the favorites in the AFC East.

In Week 1, they looked the part.

The final score of Sunday’s win over the Jets doesn’t reflect how lopsided the game was. The Bills led the Jets 21-0 in the second quarter, and Buffalo’s defense completely stifled Sam Darnold for much of the afternoon.

The most encouraging sign for the Bills in Week 1 was likely the play of quarterback Josh Allen. It came against a bad Jets defense, but Allen had a big day with both his arm and legs, finishing with 312 passing yards, 54 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.

On a day where the Patriots took care of business at Gillette Stadium, it was important for the Bills to send a message.

Allen and Co. did just that.

CBS Sports

6. Bills +1 (1-0-0)

Josh Allen had his first career 300-yard game against the Jets. He appeared much improved, but time will tell. If he is, this is a deep-playoff team.

ESPN

7. Buffalo Bills (7-0)

Preseason ranking: 11

Best rookie debut: RB Zack Moss

Moss gets the nod here after scoring a touchdown on his first career reception against the Jets. He wasn’t effective as a runner — no Bills player was besides Josh Allen — but Moss was solid in pass protection and took what the defense gave him as a receiver. It was a solid debut and the 46% of offensive snaps he played show the Bills’ trust in him early in the season.
