Potential free agent QB find for Redskins is a horror-story in the making

While Ron Rivera has yet to officially name Haskins as the Redskins QB1, a notion that Jameis Winston could be signed is panic-inducing.

Some ideas are just too crazy to even be put into the public zeitgeist.

Early last week, Ron Rivera made sure to note that rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins would have to work to hold onto his starting quarterback spot in Washington, and he mentioned in his introductory press conference that there were a couple of veteran quarterbacks that the Redskins could consider for the position.

To many, this meant that Washington would likely retain either Case Keenum or Colt McCoy — or both — into next season and let them compete with Haskins for the QB1 spot. However, there is also the possibility that the Redskins look outside of the organization and try to bring a free agent passer in to compete for the starting job.

According to The Athletic, Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent quarterback Jameis Winston could be someone who might fight that role.

Winston has had an incredibly up and down career so far in the NFL since being drafted No. 1 overall by the Bucs in 2015. His talent has been marred by poor decision making, and this past season, he became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. There is a good chance that he is playing for a new team in 2020, and The Athletic’s Greg Auman thinks the Redskins are a possibility, although he notes that it’s highly unlikely to happen.

The Redskins are already on the hook for $21 million to the injured Alex Smith, so it only complicates their quarterback situation (and salary cap) to add another expensive passer to the room. And if new coach Ron Rivera were to do that, it’d be more likely a Cam Newton reunion than to bring in an unfamiliar quarterback like Winston. So they’re included here, but this is well into “very unlikely” territory.

There is no doubt that Winston can be a prolific playmaker when given the time to make the right decision, but he’s shown a propensity to not make the right decisions even when given time. If you’re a fan of the Redskins, this would be an awful move.
