Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton is the best safety in college football and with three interceptions already and several other big defensive plays, his 2021 campaign is living up the ridiculously high expectations. To the surprise of nobody Hamilton projects to have his name called very early in the 2022 NFL draft, assuming he declares for it following this season.
But what team might be the ones drafting the Fighting Irish star?
Luke Easterling over at Draft Wire took a stab in their most recent mock draft and it’s one of the last places I want Hamilton to end up as they call for the Detroit Lions to select him fourth overall in the spring.
It’s rare that a safety prospect is worthy of top-five consideration, but Hamilton is that kind of player. He also happens to fill one of many big needs for the Lions, who have plenty of work to do in their rebuild. Hamilton does everything at an extremely high level, and his big-play ability can help transform an entire defense. – Draft Wire
That’s all fine, dandy, and true, but can it please just be literally anywhere else besides Detroit? We all saw what the Lions were able, or not able, to accomplish with all-time talents like Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson. Can we please not subject Hamilton to that same fate?
Former Notre Dame standouts Julian and Romeo Okwara both play for the Lions as does long snapper Scott Daly.
Being a potential top-five pick is awesome, but there are certainly different levels of awesome in those ranks.
