WR Cam Phillips
Buffalo may have a leg up on the competition should it ultimately choose to pursue the XFL’s standout wide receiver, as he’s already familiar with the organization.
Cam Phillips, who caught 31 passes for 455 yards and nine touchdowns throughout his five games in the XFL, spent the 2018 season with the Bills in various capacities. He signed with the team after going unselected in the 2018 NFL Draft, starting the season on Buffalo’s practice squad.
He was promoted to the team’s active roster midway through his rookie season, appearing in just two games before being demoted to the practice squad once again.
Phillips is perhaps the perfect embodiment of just how strange and misleading XFL production can be – a player who couldn’t carve out a roll in the Bills’ putrid 2018 receiving corps was the league’s best receiver by a wide margin.
With that being said, perhaps Phillips was always capable of contributing, he was just never afforded the proper opportunity. By the time Buffalo’s quarterback situation was solidified in 2018, Phillips had already been demoted to the practice squad.
The Bills’ current receiving corps is in need of some depth, as after John Brown, Cole Beasley, and the recently acquired Stefon Diggs, there’s a slight drop-off. Adding a rotational boundary receiver who could spell Diggs and Brown wouldn’t be a bad idea, and with a renewed confidence, perhaps Phillips could be that guy.
It has the makings of the perfect redemption story for Phillips – after being unable to hold onto a roster spot in Buffalo, he returns after proving his worth in another league. Wanting to prove that his success in the XFL was no fluke, returning to the NFL in a system he’s familiar with wouldn’t be a bad bet for Phillips, either.
