Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey on Friday said rookie Cade Cunningham will not play on their upcoming three-game road trip due to a right ankle sprain.
Cunningham returned to practice this week and was able to participate in various portions as he continues to recover from a right ankle sprain. He did not play in the Pistons’ regular-season opener on Wednesday and will not travel with the team on the road.
Casey said Cunningham is considered to be day-to-day with the injury.
He is working. He is day-to-day. I’m not going to put a timetable on it. He is going to stay here and work while we’re on this trip and make sure he goes through the steps to be ready to play when he is ready to play.
The Pistons will begin their road trip on Saturday with the Chicago Bulls, and will then face the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers. The earliest Cunningham could potentially play is Oct. 30 when the Pistons return home and host the Orlando Magic.
The team has maintained that they will not rush Cunningham back into action too quickly. The final call on clearing him to play will come from the medical staff, Casey previously said, which could come in the near future.
