Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey on Friday said rookie Cade Cunningham is day-to-day with a right hip pointer suffered on Tuesday in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Cunningham was ruled out of playing on Friday versus the Boston Celtics, his second straight game missed because of the injury. Casey said those injuries can be painful to experience but, in the case of Cunningham, it is not believed to be serious.
It is nothing serious but we’re going to be cautious with it. He has just gotta get those muscles in his behind firing the right way and the soreness out. … He’ll be out tonight but we’ll see how it goes tomorrow. It is going to be a day-to-day thing to see how the soreness goes away.
The contest on Friday will be the 11th of the season Cunningham has missed. He missed five games at the beginning of the season because of an ankle injury suffered during training camp and four due to the health and safety protocol.
Cunningham on Wednesday was named the NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month after averaging 17.3 points, 5.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals in January. He led all first-year players in scoring and became the sixth Pistons rookie to win the award.
