Pistons’ Cade Cunningham ruled out of season opener vs. Bulls

Cunningham returned to practice this week and was able to participate in various drills as he continues to recover from an ankle sprain.

Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham was ruled out of playing in the regular-season opener on Wednesday at home versus the Chicago Bulls, the team announced prior to the contest.

Cunningham returned to practice this week and was able to participate in various portions as he continues to recover from a right ankle sprain. Pistons head coach Dwane Casey has maintained the team will not rush him back and would not put a timetable on his return.

The Pistons are still working to find the right rotations without Cunningham.

“I think it’ll be fluid as far as the rotation is concerned, just to mix and match and how people go,” Casey said before the game. “There is going to be a lot of competition at all positions. Whoever is playing well will get those minutes. That is going to be fun to watch.”

Cunningham has been seen this week shooting around with the team and appears to be close to a return to the court. The final call on clearing him to play will come from the medical staff, Casey said on Tuesday, which could come soon.

The Pistons return to action next with the Bulls again on Saturday in Chicago.
