Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham has missed the past few days of practice due to what the team called a mild ankle injury, head coach Dwane Casey said.
Cunningham turned his ankle last week and was experiencing some swelling. The team is going to be cautious with the injury and not rush him back into action too quickly. They would like to have him ready for the first preseason game on Wednesday but will not rush the process.
“He has been out the last few days with an ankle sprain,” Casey said. “It’s nothing serious. We want to make sure he comes back where it’s fully healed and not reinjure it and miss more time. Let’s go ahead and get it 100% and then bring him back. The worst thing for him is to miss more time now and then later on.”

Casey said minor nicks and bruises are part of the process of participating in a training camp. He did not sound too concerned when discussing the setback but just wanted to ensure Cunningham was fully healthy before clearing him to return to practice.
The Pistons have been preaching patience with Cunningham throughout training camp. They know Cunningham will have some ups and downs this year but will be focusing more on developing him the right way on and off the court.
Certainly, part of that process will be to properly rehab from any potential injuries this season.
