Sloppy, disjointed and at times a bit out of control, Rutgers basketball continued their nasty slide to end the regular season with a 65-53 loss to Northwestern. Rutgers has now lost six of their last eight games heading into this week’s Big Ten Tournament.
With the loss, Rutgers finishes the regular season 18-13 (10-10). They are the ninth seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Up 10-3 at the 15:19 mark of the first half, Rutgers went cold on the offensive end and simply couldn’t figure out how to consistently stop Northwestern. After a slow start, the Wildcats went in a 19-4 run to stake out a 22-14 lead late in the first half. Rutgers would hang tight at times but was routinely down double digits in the second half.
Rutgers struggled offensively, unable to penetrate and taking poor perimeter shots. On defense, the hallmark of the program under head coach Steve Pikiell, Rutgers consistently overpursued and at times played recklessly as they chased the game.
