A tale as old as time.
Pro Football Focus continues to not be a fan of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
The folks at PFF, who are always coming up with new methods to rate and rank, have turned to using the” Bayesian Updating.”
Per PFF:
“Using Bayesian Updating as the basis of our analysis, which yields a career posterior mean and a posterior distribution (which describes the uncertainty) for each quarterback. This helps us to get better predictions compared to using just the data from last season.”
In regard to Allen, he ranks as the 30th best quarterback in the NFL via PFF’s metric.
PFF at it again…
Some of the top quarterbacks are certainly hard to argue with. The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes lands at the top spot, edging out the Seahawks’ Russell Wilson and Saints’ Drew Brees, respectively.
Then, the slew questionables.
The Broncos’ Drew Lock has made five career starts, he’s at No. 29. The Bears don’t even know if Nick Foles is their starter yet and he’s at No. 27. Don’t worry, at least we know Joe Burrow, who hasn’t played a single NFL snap yet, will start for the Bengals. And evidently that alone makes him better than Allen, since he’s at No. 26.
And the beats go on: the Redskins’ Dwayne Haskins (25), Panthers’ Teddy Bridgewater (24), Giants’ Daniel Jones (23), and heck, let’s throw a few of our old friends on for good measure, PFF?
22: Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor.
21: Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Of course, both of those guys might not even be starters for their own team come opening day with rookie first rounders in their QB rooms.
Classic analytics guys.
Allen isn’t among the best of the best, but he deserves better than this.
