PFF names Kadarius Toney the Giants’ X-factor in 2022

Pro Football Focus has named wide receiver Kadarius Toney the New York Giants’ biggest X-factor in 2022.

The New York Giants will enter the 2022 regular season with a new general manager, new head coach, new coaching staff, new system and roughly 40% roster turnover.

A lot has changed in just six months, but it was necessary. The organization has fallen on hard times and they’re doing everything in their power to course-correct.

The turnaround isn’t expected to be instant, however. There are still several issues that will likely plague the Giants this season, including lacking depth at certain positions and some lingering injuries to key players.

One such player is second-year wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who had a tumultuous rookie and then spent considerable time in the red non-contact jersey this spring. There’s also potential competition facing Toney as the Giants selected Wan’Dale Robinson — a receiver very similar to Toney in skillset — in April’s draft.

Head coach Brian Daboll doesn’t envision an issue with the similar talents and Pro Football Focus tends to agree. They see a high upside for Toney — assuming he can stay on the field — which is why they recently named him the Giants’ biggest X-factor for 2022.

X factor for 2022: Wide receiver Kadarius Toney has had an eventful first year-plus in the NFL, including being at the center of trade rumors earlier this offseason that have since died down. When he was on the field as a rookie last season, Toney looked like the dynamic playmaker the Giants drafted him in the first round to be. He was one of just 15 wide receivers in the league to average over 2 receiving yards per route run on at least 100 routes. The issue seems to be him staying on the field. Toney sat out OTAs following a minor arthroscopic surgery that he had on a knee this offseason.

Toney flashed at times as a rookie despite Joe Judge and Jason Garrett’s restrictive offense, but consistency and health are something he needs to find. His unique blend of talent and athleticism does the Giants no good if he spends more time on the pine than the field.
