Penn State Class of 2022 QB Drew Allar named Mr. Football in Ohio

Incoming Penn State QB Drew Allar is the second Nittany Lions player all-time to win the title of Mr. Football in Ohio

The excitement is continuing to build for future Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. Allar, who will headline Penn State’s Class of 2022 starting next week with the dawn of the early signing period, has been named Mr. Football in his home state of Ohio. In doing so, Allar becomes just the second player to go on to play for Penn State to receive such an honor.

Allar was officially recognized as Ohio’s latest Mr. Football on Thursday by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association. The award was first presented in 1987, and Allar is the first player from Medina High School to receive the honor.

“I’m super grateful for the honor and super excited about it, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches,” Allar said in a released statement. “It wasn’t just me. We had a great team and a great coaching staff. That’s why we were so successful.”

Allar completed 305-of509 passes for 4,444 yards and 48 touchdowns with seven interceptions this season. In addition, Allar rushed for 382 yards and nine touchdowns for Medina, which finished the season 13-1 with the lone loss coming in a regional final to the eventual state champion.

Allar is now the second player to go on to play for Penn State to receive the Mr. Football honor in Ohio since its inception in 1987. The only other Nittany Lion in that span has been former running back Curtis Enis. Enis was named Mr. Football in Ohio in 1993. He went on to become a first-round draft pick with the fifth overall pick of the Chicago Bears in 1998.

Other former Mr. Football players in Ohio over the years have included Joe Burrow, Mitchell Trubisky, Maurice Clarett, Charles Woodson, and Bobby Hoying.

Allar has been a strong commitment to the Nittany Lions since the hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, and it is widely expected Allar will have an opportunity to break into a significant role fairly quickly following the pending departure of Sean Clifford. Clifford has yet to confirm what his intentions are for after the 2021 season. Clifford has the option of coming back for another season, but he has not provided any indication what his plan is moving forward, and he may not until after the Outback Bowl.

Regardless of what Clifford ultimately decides, Allar is being hyped as the future at the quarterback position in Happy Valley, which could lead to some ripples on the QB depth chart with regard to the transfer portal.
