The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Arizona Cardinals today for their second exhibition of the preseason. A brutal loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday dashed Kansas City’s hopes of an undefeated preseason, and the Chiefs are hoping to get back on track in their return to State Farm Stadium, where they won Super Bowl LVII in February.
Patrick Mahomes, in particular, is looking to get his team back on track before the regular season kickoff in September. Mahomes was asked about what he would like to see Kansas City do better in their second preseason game after the Chiefs’ final training camp practice on Thursday.
He made it clear that he expected the team to play with more effort and persistence against the Cardinals.
“Just better energy, better urgency just from the get-go,” He explained. “I thought the young guys did a great job in the second half of kind of picking it up. But I think just from the get-go, offense, and defense, just having that urgency to go out there and compete. It’s a preseason game and obviously, the results don’t necessarily matter but they do if you want to build a culture of winning.
“We have a lot of young guys and even though they won a Super Bowl, they know how to respond and get even better the second year. So, I think just having better urgency from the get-go throughout the entire game, not as much the result, you obviously want to win but you want to have that mentality throughout the entire game.”
Kansas City can’t afford to lay another egg this weekend after the heartbreaking defeat they suffered in Week 1 of the preseason. Watch for Mahomes to help motivate his teammates as the Chiefs strive to secure their first exhibition win of 2023.
