Panthers vs. Jets 2021: Carolina opens as 5-point favorites in Week 1

The Panthers are opening as 5-point favorites over Jets? Yeah, that seems about right.

Despite some recent forecasts that predict a cloudy future ahead for the Carolina Panthers, at least they’re favored somewhere, right?

Well, that’s because they’re hosting the New York Jets, a team even further behind in a rebuilding process, for their 2021 season opener. Initial odds set by BetMGM have Carolina as five-point favorites over the visitors.

This, again, seems spot on considering where both teams currently stand. While neither are a particularly serious threats just yet, the Panthers are at least a good step and a half ahead of the Jets in their respective paths to contendership.

The Jets finished tied for a league-worst 2-14 record a season ago, earning them the second overall pick and, subsequently, BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. He and fellow rookie (perhaps you can technically call him that), head coach Robert Saleh, will start writing the first chapter of this franchise’s newest book on Sunday.

Matt Rhule and the Panthers will look to make it a horror story, at least in this one, as they come off a 5-11 campaign in his first go as the head coach. This time, however, they’ll be led by a new quarterback and a face that’s quite familiar to their opponents, Sam Darnold.
