On Wednesday morning, we learned the Carolina Panthers won’t be trading for a certain quarterback, at least any time soon. They will, though, be adding a new pass catcher into the fold.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers will be signing wideout Devin Smith to its practice squad.
FA WR Devin Smith is signing with the #Panthers practice squad today, source said. The former #Jets 2nd rounder has a new home. He recently spent time with the #Patriots and #Jaguars.

Smith was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2015 draft out of the Ohio State University. The former Buckeye had himself a standout college career, amassing 2,503 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns over his four years in Columbus.
His professional career, however, has yet to catch up to his billing. The 6-foot-1, 199-pound speedster has totaled just 248 yards and a pair of scores in his 22 NFL games.
In addition to his brief time with the Jets, Smith has now recorded stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, New England Patriots and, most recently, the Jacksonville Jaguars. He did appear in the 2021 season opener against Houston, where he registered one target over nine offensive snaps.
